[전시회] Turner to Monet

텍사스 주립대 미술관인 블랜튼 미술관(Blanton Museum of Art)에서 19세기 미술 특별 전시회가 3개월 간 열렸습니다. 월터스 미술관(Walters Art Museum)에 소장된 작품들을 가까이서 볼 수 있는 기회였는데요, 인상파 미술을 좋아하기 때문에 바로 훌쩍 갔다왔습니다. 본 작품들을 월터스 미술관 웹사이트에서 다시 볼 수 있더라고요. 아주 친절한 배려, 고맙습니다(__)

	전시회 들어가는 입구에서 사진 한방입니다. 블랜튼 미술관은 어시틴 시내, 텍사스주립대 남단에 위치하고 있으며, 바로 건너편에는 스토리 오브 텍사스(Story of Texas)라는 텍사스의 주립 박물관이 있습니다.
	위 사진에서도 볼 수 있지만, 블랜튼 미술관은 이 동네 전통 건축양식을 채용하고 있습니다. 뜨겁디 뜨거운 텍사스의 햇빛을 막기 위해 지붕이 많이 뻗어있고 건물 주위에 그늘진 복도가 둘러져있습니다.

전에는 몰랐는데, 우리 단지 내에 반딧불 엄청 많네요?

아파트 내를 산책하고 왔는데, 은근히 곳곳에 리글반딧불 서식처가 있더라고요. 그것도 수가 무척 많아서 무슨 모래사장이 반짝이는 것처럼 끊임없이 반디불 반짝반짝.. 한 번 한 눈에 들어오는 반딧불 불빛의 개수도 많고…

가까이서 본 반딧불도 여럿 있습니다. 윙윙 날아다니는 게 아니라 잠자리처럼 공중부양(?)을 하더라고요. 그러다가 형광 노란색 불을 배 부분에서 확 내면서 용오름 치듯이(^^;;) 날아오릅니다. 너무나 예쁜 광경~

사진기는 고장나서 사진 못 찍네요. 엄청 아쉬움…

Last few days in Post Woods

Well, I’ll be leaving for Korea in a few days, and even after I return it won’t be too long before I leave this apartment for Texas. So I thought I’d might as well post my thoughts on this apartment.

I LOVE this apartment. This has been simply the best apartment that I have ever lived in (well, that’s not too many, but anyway). First of all, the management seems quite proud of their landscaping crew, and they have every single right to. The apartment complex is beautiful. Very wooded, but doesn’t seem much like a dark, dank forest. I love how the apartment is surrounded by a wall of trees, and if you add the fact that it’s located in some sort of small basin the entire place seems very secure, like a fortified citadel of some sort (I’m exaggerating, I know).

There’s also a lot of birds, and the sounds of them singing is fantastic. Lots of flowers planted throughout, and patches of gardens here and there. The gardens especially make the complex look a lot like a nice park. And last but not least, the two ponds with their share of fish and geese.

The one quibble I have with my (soon to be former) apartment is that it lacks natural light. However, my house is under a huge tree which blocks off a lot of natural light, but doubles as shade during the summer, so I guess I can’t have things both ways. It’s been a fantastic apartment, and I hope to feel the same in Austin.

기분 좋은 날

잔잔히 눈이 내리는 바깥 풍경을 보면서 (애틀란타에 눈이!!!) Sketch book ~full color’S~ OST를 들으며, 맛있는 얼그레이 홍차를 마시며… 눈과 이 OST와 차 한잔이 얼마나 잘 어울리는지 참으로 마음이 고요하다. 창 밖에 보이는 풍경은 아파트 숲이라 겨울 내내 앙상한 나무가지였지만, 오늘만큼은 눈으로 장식된 숲. 물론 하는 일은 회사일이긴 하지만, 이 정도로도 얼마나 마음 편안해지는 일인지…

2007년 마지막 날

안개가 엄청나게 끼었있네요, 여기 Atlanta는… 가뭄이 심하다, 심하다하고 있다가 금요일부터인가(?) 비가 연일 내렸고, 기윽고 오늘 아침에는 짙은 안개가 끼었네요. 이렇게나 짙은 안개는 정말 몇 년만에 처음보는 듯. 신나서 동네 몇바퀴 돌았는데, 아쉽게도 카메라가 고장이라 사진은 하나도 못 찍었네요. 나 안개 좋아하는데….ㅜ.ㅜ 특히 호수가가 정말 끝내주게 분위기 있었는데….

일어나서 불어터진 떡만두국을 먹었습니다. 정말, 많이 불어터진 떡만두국이죠. 대략 12시간 동안 불렸나?-_-;; 어제 처음으로 떡만두국을 만들어봤는데, 초보자다운 실수로 너무나 많은 양을 만드는 바람에… 뭐 생각보다 이상하지는 않았으니까 된 거겠죠 (터진 김치만두가 국물을 얼큰하게 만들어줘서 오히려 어제보다 맛있었다…).

그리고 한국 새해에 맞춰서 동부시각 10시, 한국시각 2008년에 한국에 전화하려다 실패, 결국 한국쪽에서 전화를 해주었음.

Condolences to Sung Yoon

Just found out that professor Sung Yoon has passed away. A good mentor and elder in Christ, may he rest well.

It’s interesting how there were so few people watching TV a while ago, but just as the soccer game between Manchester United and Roma started, the area in front of the TV is now packed!

Steampunk Keyboard

This guy has created an insanely beautiful keyboard. Not only is it beautiful, it is a reincarnation of the IBM Model M keyboard. What could be better than that?

My MLR (Music Listening Room)

A favorite place of mine when listening to music is in my car. Think about it: it is enclosed, has reclining seats, and has relatively large speakers that give much better quality than your desktop speaker or your earphone. What more could you possibly want except a custom music listening room that costs the thousands?

Well, there is actually one thing that my car lacks: an earphone jack, or at least the ability to play mp3 (or ogg!) files. After switching over to music files in 2001 by buying an iRiver MP3-CD player, I am now back to audio CD. Every time I’d like to listen to new music, I have to burn another CD. Very time consuming…

PS: I usually listen to the radio when listening to classical music, and this has some drawbacks. 90.1 WABE has poor coverage in some areas, and I know almost expect classical music to have static.
